To start off, this is not a tutorial. However, this will be my first post to our page and in typical “Nick” fashion, I am sure it will be filled with extraneous details and overly drawn-out explanations. If you have watched any of our channel’s videos you are probably very familiar with the manner in which I wax on about a subject. Seriously though, I will try to keep it concise and on topic. I said “Try”.
Since this is my first post, it’s probably prudent to introduce myself a little and give our unsuspecting readers, followers, and misdirected browsers some perspective on our site. Why are we here and what do we hope to accomplish? Well, it’s probably simple enough to say, we are here to create a place to share our experiences. We hope you will come to enjoy it. Who am I? Well currently, I am a guy enjoying life after the military, figuring out that retirement in my 40’s leaves me with a lot of time on my hands. So, as you may come to find, my post may be a little longer than Dori’s. What is this talk of starting a photography business? Well, that is the subject of this post, I think.
As with almost all of us currently living in the 21st century, the advent of the digital camera, has enabled us all to become something of a photographer. You can take images and videos directly to the internet with ease and the shutter counts even our children have, is probably astounding as compared to 20 years ago. In fact, thinking about the millions of terabytes of information we have collectively captured of our world in images, is a staggering thought. So, what does this have to do with me and starting a “photography business”? Well because it’s one thing to take a lot of pictures, it’s something else completely when you take those pictures to capture the connection of that moment between you as the photographer and whatever the subject may be. With the abundance of opportunity and endless variations of composures the world provides, it seems acceptable to add one more perspective to it.
It is about that moment when you observe your environment, and you are compelled to capture the essence of feeling that exist between you and your surroundings. It’s a desire to manipulate and freeze time, so you can bottle it up and save it. Perhaps it’s just for you, so you can look back on that moment one day and say I remember. Maybe it’s so you can share that moment with someone else. Often, it’s probably both. For me, it’s usually both.
Recently, I have had the fortunate opportunity to reflect back and review years of photos I have taken. In doing so I have decided that while I have the time and the ability, pursuing my interest in photography would be worthy of my attention and efforts. So now my initial curation of photos is available for viewing and purchase through an online website. Mind you, there are still many photos I am reviewing and adding weekly or even daily.
What is a good photograph? That’s a funny question, isn’t it? We all know it’s subjective. But I think it’s the ability for the photo to tell a story, to express a feeling, to make the viewer relate to it. What makes a good photographer? Well, I suppose, that’s a person who has learned to use the camera in way that they can capture those compelling moments. It’s a person with the ability to see and share their unique perspective of the world that resonates with others.
As I have been meticulously reviewing my photos, and scrutinizing them from a perspective of, would I buy this? I have become very aware that photo quality is important. Are the shots in focus? Did I get the composition right? Which one is the perfect shot? I have observed that photos I have personally really liked and often shared, are sometimes lacking in image quality, technically deficient, or just overall terrible for production. It has really made me evaluate my skills, technical understanding, and proficiency in the realm of photography. It has also inspired me to get more serious about my technical knowledge of photography and improve my skills.
So why start a photography business? Why not? One of the beauties and tragedies of today is our ability to create and consume has never been greater. By putting my work out there to be printed and reproduced by others, it gives me an opportunity to share and reach others with some amazing, inspiring, and humbling views of the world. It gives a photograph the opportunity to live and not be condemned to the digital trash heap of civilization. So, I hope to share a perspective, a feeling, or a connection through a photograph. When we are looking, the world can show us the most amazing things. The camera gives us the potential to capture and share those images. I want to be there; we want you to be there.
